When a pandemic is creating havoc worldwide, climate change as a concern has somehow taken a backseat. But not for everyone! Some environmental warriors have been in the ‘front lines’ and done all they could to look into the climate change issues. Checking ample provision of clean water, protecting the oceans reducing dependence on fossil fuels, stopping fracking, and collaborating with all such organizations that would delve into every aspect of climatic change.
They have left no stone unturned. What’s great is that they never hesitated to go behind bars, raise protests now and then, stand before the UN or sail the Sargasso Sea to raise this vital message before the public. Most of these names belong to the Hollywood fraternity, and that should be an inspiration for most of us to make climate a priority for activism projects. Here are a few of them.
David Attenborough – Veteran UK Spokesman
When narrating about the changes noticed in consumer behavior and as rightly pointed out by the British naturalist and broadcaster David Attenborough, most experts have cited what is known as the “Attenborough effect.” Even at 93, he inspires several others to keep on with tireless campaigns, to change the mindsets and perceptions of people on climate change.
Last year, he spoke in the UN-sponsored climate talks in Poland, based on the same subject. Alongside a few others like the World Bank/IMF Spring Meetings in Washington DC, the World Economic Forum in Switzerland, and also the Student Conference on Conservation Science in Cambridge, UK, to name a few. His greatest stint has been the TV series that even includes “Our Planet” from Netflix and “Climate Change- The Facts” from BBC.
Matt Damon – Crusader For Clean Water
In the developing world, we are indebted to the ‘Ford v Ferrari’ star for how he has crusaded when it comes to clean water. Way back in 2006, his NGO named H20 Africa Foundation came out three years later, he combined along with WaterPartners, from Gary White.
Together, they formed Water.org. More than a decade and this body remain a force to reckon with. And in terms of educating and bettering the standards of less-privileged communities all across the globe.
James Cameron And Suzy Amis Cameron – Carbon Reduction Workers
A power couple James and Suzy, stand exemplary for continued championing vital environmentalist causes. They have been doing it decades after decades. Suzy resorted to plant-based eating to reduce the ‘dramatic’ carbon footprint that meats often create.
On the other hand, notable filmmaker (of Titanic and Avatar fame) James Cameron infuses climate-conscious themes and storylines into his franchises. Speaking to ‘Variety’ he said the next three sequels would also be in the same line.
Leonardo Dicaprio – Content Creating Philanthropist
Arguably the most visible person from Hollywood who chooses to stay in the front zone of the climate crisis, DiCaprio, the Oscar-winning actor, has donated no less than $5 million to save the Amazon rainforest from the devastating wildfires via the organization “Earth Alliance.” He co-chairs this with another philanthropist- Laurene Powell Jobs.
Additionally, he donated money to numerous other causes. Besides that, he keeps updated with public remarks regarding natural disasters, symptoms of climate change, and the extinction of natural habitats. He also features such aspects in documentary films. This summer’s “Ice on Fire” and the Toronto-premier “And We Go Green: deserve mention for the notable contributions he made.
Greta Thunberg
Just 16, and Greta is already a world icon. Three years back, she protested before the Swedish parliament for active action towards climate change. She began a global youth movement, skipping school, and there were close to 1.6 million people based in about 100 countries who participated there.
Since then, there’s no stopping her. Because of her timely efforts, most kids of her age took to the European Parliament in Strasbourg, the National Assembly in Paris, the World Economic Forum, and the United Nations – where she had voiced for her generation. Her protests continue to draw several young activists even today, for she rightly said, “You are never too small to make a difference…”
The warriors are not the only ones. But they are the ones who made sure to grab the world’s attention towards climate change. These change warriors are making a difference to the world. And it’s time that the rest of us join in to save the planet too!
